AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program that gives you the opportunity to make a difference in your life and help strengthen schools and the students, families, and communities they serve by participating in service and volunteer activities. AmeriCorps VISTA Associates receive a monthly stipend and have the opportunity to earn an education award in exchange for one year of service.

Agency Description

Safe Passages is a non-profit organization committed to disrupting the cycle of poverty by engaging youth and families to build and drive a continuum of services that supports student success and community development. Safe Passages serves over 4,000 children and families annually through our strategies that span the age continuum of birth through young adulthood, including Early Childhood, School Linked Services, Juvenile Justice and Career Pathways.

Member Duties

AmeriCorps VISTA members with Safe Passages will support in either the development of a Family Resource Center (FRC) at school sites in Oakland, CA or Union City, CA, OR will work to support capacity building services at Safe Passages’ central office. FRC VISTAs will work closely with Safe Passages, their assigned school site, and school leadership to identify and secure resources to set up or develop FRCs at the school site and create new and expand existing partnerships to provide an array of services. Alternatively, central office VISTAs will be assigned to one of the following VISTA roles: Volunteer Management, Volunteer Recruitment, Development, Social Media, and Program Development.

Candidates MUST be available and commit for a full year of full-time service. Applications are rolling and based on position availability at the time. 

Program Benefits

VISTAs will receive a $1,150.80 biweekly stipend; health coverage; childcare assistance, if eligible; relocation allowance (if moving 50+ miles); an end of service education award of $6,345 paid upon successful completion; federal loan forbearance or deferment; and professional development training and coaching.
